The Banded Hifin Shark (Myxocyprinus asiaticus) is an unusual-looking fish not often seen by aquarists. It has alternating thick black and tan bands, an arched back and the namesake high dorsal fin. They are also known as the Chinese Sailfin Shark since they are native to two river basins in China.
These fish are not true sharks but are actually more closely related to loaches or carp. They are not tropical fish and are naturally found in cooler waters. This makes them suitable for ponds along with koi and goldfish who share many of the similar trade. The Banded Hifin Sharks also has a similar diet to these more common pond animals. They can be fed pond flakes or pellets and a diet high in vegetation. Although often sold as small juveniles, these fish can grow very large and should be kept in a very large aquarium or pond.
size and needs 8/5/2016 Reviewer: Claude Poole This fish in the wild will grow to 3 feet and more. Although it will not achieve full size in an aquarium, it is certainly not suitable for a 100 gallon aquarium. This fish needs a good size pond. Also, being a schooling fish it will not be happy by itself.
