Several species of coral are regularly known as "Lace Coral" or "Fire Coral". Distichopora sp. grows in blunt-tipped fan-shaped colonies. Stylaster sp. has pointed tips on its branching colonies. Millepora sp. has a variety of forms and is the most notorious for delivering a powerful sting if touched. Though Distichopora and Stylaster share the common name of "Fire Coral", they do not sting.
Stylaster and Distichopora are both filter-feeders and are not photosynthetic. They should be spot fed regularly and placed in moderate to high water flow, preferably in a low-light or overhang placement. They have a hard calcium carbonate exoskeleton and race mineral and calcium levels in the aquarium should be monitored for proper growth of the coral. Millepora is photosynthetic and needs moderate to high lighting and flow.
Stylaster and Distichopora are both nonaggressive and very sensitive, delicate corals. Millepora is much hardier but is also much more aggressive.
