Bubble Corals (Plerogyra sp.) get their name from the daytime expansion of their tissue. Also called Cat's Eye or Grape Coral, these corals can have a variety of blue and pearl colorations as well as more rare green varieties.
These corals are considered aggressive because they use sweeper tentacles that can expand several inches at night for feeding. They will also use these sweeper tentacles to sting adjacent corals if they are a threat to their territory. For this reason they will need sufficient room to be able to expand.
These corals require medium to high light, and require low water movement for full expansion. In most tanks they should be placed midway and higher in the tank to thrive. As Bubble Corals can expand and can easily be damaged by their sharp skeletons, Bubble Corals should be firmly secured into place to prevent them from falling over.
