The Peacock Mantis Shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus) is one of the most popular, most colorful and largest Mantis Shrimps available to aquarists. Like the colorful tails of their namesake, their coloration is mostly blue, green and purple. The body is primarily greenish and the appendages may be tipped in bright red or orange. They are identified by the large dark spots on the bottom of their carapace (the region just behind the eyes). This mantis is a strong "smasher".
Mantis Shrimp have highly specialized care and requirements and can harm tankmates or the aquarist. For in-depth information on mantis shrimp care and research, please visit That Fish Blog for PART 1 and PART 2 of Frank Indiviglio's entry, Mantis Shrimp (Order:Stomatopoda) - Breaking Research and Care in Captivity.
Mantis Shrimp are not traditional "shrimp" but are actually members of their own group known as Stomatopods. They are some of the most notorious "hitchhikers" that occassionally show up in a tank after hiding in live rock or corals. They have very powerful claws that can crush shells, split flesh or even crack aquarium glass (an acrylic tank is recommended). Mantis shrimp need meaty foods and will prey on tankmates.
Mantis shrimp earn a bad reputation but they are fascinating creatures for a species-only aquarium. Individuals like this brightly colored specimen are attractive and make the perfect "pet" for an aquarist looking for a change from the norm!
Excellent Friend 12/13/2016 Reviewer: Ryan I live by myself and this here Peacock Mantis Shrimp kept me company into the long nights. I have limited amounts of friends but this mantis shrimp is my love and my life. I'm so happy I get to see him everyday. I recommend this as not only a pet, but also a friend. 5 stars all the way.
